●Use the recruiter’s name instead of “Sir or Madam” if you know it.

●Most recruiters only read the first few sentences, so make sure they’re good! You should put your most valuable assets, something like: As an international trade specialist with more than eight years of experience and high English certification, I believe I would be a good fit for your ____ position.

●Your experience and skills are already listed in your CV – the autobiography is a chance for the employer to get to know your personality and how you would approach your job. Therefore, the more specific you can be, the better. For example, instead of just saying you worked in Australia, maybe write a sentence or two about someone you met and what they taught you, or how your horizons were widened.

●The same is true for your work experience: Your responsibilities were already listed in your CV and are standard for the position, so it isn’t very interesting to read them. It would be better to explain something you’re proud of accomplishing, or a time you encountered some difficulty, how you overcame it, and what you learned from the experience. This shows the employer that you are able to learn, instead of just saying “I am a fast learner.”

●Western companies also want to hear why you want to work for them, instead of another company. It is important to include something specific about the company and why you are interested in working there – maybe their product is very interesting or the job description is very well-suited to your interests. A company will be happy you took the time to research them.

●Companies also want to hear how you will be a good asset for them, not how they can help you. The more specific you can be, the better.

●Keep it short. Recruiters are likely reading hundreds of these, so they don’t have lots of time. Only include the interesting stuff.
